In progress 2026
NextWatch
The problem
In July 2026, TV Time shut down.
It was one of the most popular apps for tracking movies and shows, and when it closed, millions of people had to find a new home for their watch history. The trackers left behind mostly do the same thing: log what you've watched and show you the same generic suggestions as everyone else.
What I'm building
A new tracker for movies and TV shows.
NextWatch is built by a team of three: a designer, a mobile engineer for iOS and Android, and me on the backend. You track what you watch, follow your progress episode by episode, and get a better way to find what to watch next.
I'm building the backend: the service that stores each user's library and progress, and serves everything the iOS and Android apps show. The core is already working:
- Libraries and episode-by-episode progress, with rules that match real TV. For example, a show that's still airing can't be marked as completed.
- A fast layer over TMDB's movie data, cached so the app stays quick, and still working if the cache goes down.
- Secure sign-in handled by a separate auth service, so the backend never touches passwords.
What's next
Discovery.
I'm now working on discovery, the part of NextWatch I'm most excited about. A full case study will follow when the first version is live.
